Howard Epstein, MD: Exploring Vasectomy
Welcome to Advanced Urology Institute, the largest urology practice in Florida. In this video, we discuss vasectomies and their potential reversibility. While it's important to consider the possibility of reversing a vasectomy, if you're considering this procedure, it implies that you may not be fully committed to the idea.

Occasionally, we encounter individuals who express a desire to have a vasectomy for a temporary period and then reverse it. However, we do not perform vasectomies for such short-term intentions. It's crucial to understand the long-term consequences before moving forward with the procedure. If you fully comprehend the repercussions and still wish to proceed, we have no qualms about accommodating your request.

When performing vasectomies, I prefer to use anesthesia for patient comfort. While many urologists opt for local anesthesia in their offices, I prefer to have an anesthesiologist present. This allows us to administer medication for sedation as per each individual's unique needs. Factors such as skin thickness can influence the ease or difficulty of the procedure, warranting personalized sedation.

I strive to treat my patients as I would like to be treated, ensuring their comfort throughout the process. It's worth mentioning that undergoing the procedure with local anesthesia is perfectly acceptable and may be suitable for some patients. Dr. Ross, our retired colleague, once completed a vasectomy procedure in just 14 minutes. Following his procedure, he used an ice pack and rested over the weekend while taking a Valium beforehand to calm his nerves. Driven home by his wife due to the influence of the medication, he resumed work on Monday without any complications.

If you're interested in vasectomy or have any concerns, we encourage you to reach out to our team at Advanced Urology Institute. Your well-being and satisfaction are our top priorities.

Howard Epstein, MD:
Basically, I go over all that with them and tell them that if you're going to do it, we also have to go over the chances of reversing it. But if you're going to do it, in my mind, you're obviously not thinking about reversing it. Every once in a while, I'll have an individual that comes in, I just want to have it for five years and then reverse it, and I won't do that. But bottom line is, if they want to have it and they understand the consequences, no problem. Yeah, well, I like to do it with some anesthesia. What I mean by that is, it can be done either local in the office, which a lot of urologists do, and that's fine. I like to do it, actually, with an anesthesiologist, so they can give them some more medicine to sedate them, because everyone's different, you never know how easy or hard it's going to be, depending on the thickness of the skin, things like that. And I also try to treat patients the way I want to be treated. You're putting me out. But there's nothing wrong with having it done at a local.

Chad Bryan, PA-C:
Dr. Ross, he's been retired now for a couple years, year and a half, and literally, I think I watched the clock, 14 minutes, 14 minutes out the door, ice pack, had the wife, I did take a Valium prior, I would recommend that to ease the nerves. Wife drives you home because you can't drive with any type of influence, and then just took it easy all weekend, back to work on Monday.
