After Mercedes revealed its W14 F1 car at Silverstone, viewers were surprised but pleased to see the return of the black silver arrow, albeit with a lot more "naked carbon" than before. But why is the car back in black, and why are they so confident in their W13 2022 car's design concept that they haven't switched over to a Red Bull or Ferrari style design? Alex Kalinauckas chats with Martyn Lee to discuss these questions and more.

The story is true, Alfred Neubauer who was the then team manager ordered the cars to be stripped of the white that they were painted (the then German racing colour) and to be taken back to bare metal. This resulted in the original silver arrow

Stunning looking car, but is it quick. Loved the series of 'launch' videos so far.
We've recently seen some real cars too instead of a load of corporate branding bullshit

I LOVE naked carbon! It's so Kool how there are diagonal lines all over the car. They are very subtle & actually give it a matte' kinda look. Looks fast as hell. It's lighter & has more horse power. We will find out very soon how fast it is in comparison to Red Bull.

Looks so amazing. Love the all carbon colour to it.

That is how the stories goes, they were overweight in the 30:s so they shaved off the white colour and managed the weight limit, hence they got clean aluminium/silver.

Back then germany had white as colour, england green, italy red and france blue.

What if the RB19 is the RB18 w/ the updated rules package & they using the savings for updated throughout the season?

Little bit annoyed with all of the media talking about RB, SF, Mercs and no one was really looking for a "dark horse " among the others... imho @alfaromeo looking really sharp 😍 adopting ineresting solutions from top teams combined with (hopefully reliable) Ferrari engine it could surprise many of frontrunners😁💪💪💪

Really looks like they have a vertical AND horizontal air intake into the side pods, but the black makes it impossible to get a good look at it. Anyone else seeing that?

Mercedes already proved the design worked towards the second half of the season. The biggest issue on the W13 was the floor.

Front wing ect looks more ferrari to me but side pods and rear is definitely their own thing. Interesting how it goes.

Mercedes have to do it their own way. Any team that copies last years Red Bull is hoping that they have gone the wrong way with this years development. Lets hope they can get the weight down enough to paint it silver, it looks like there's too much black out there from what we've seen so far.

To get an 8th wdc in the fully maxxed out zero-side-pod design would be the icing on the cake...
