Japan marks 70th anniversary of Battle of Okinawa

Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Tuesday attended a ceremony to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of the Battle of Okinawa, the bloodiest episode in the fighting in the Pacific during WWII. Okinawa remained occupied by the US military until 1972, when Tokyo regained control. But it is still home to about 26,000 US troops and several bases, which have proved controversial.
