I guess the only way that would make sense is if they were shooting downhill and relying on gravity to accelerate the arrow.

Hey Dr. Hanson! I got a quick question; If you were to shoot a bow at a target that was somewhat far, you'd aim slightly upwards so the arrow travels in an arch. In this case, would it be possible that the arrow actually hits the target at a greater velocity/with more energy than the initial velocity? I think that's what he was referring to, the arrow falling down in an arch and building up velocity that way.
