Oh my goodness, you are just the sweetest to quote my comments from your GR review. Obviously I didn't *love* the underlying current between Viane and Beck but I actually liked that Kristin Hannah showed that. I thought it only added to the realism. Not only did it humanize Beck but it just seemed so plausible (not admirable, but certainly plausible). They are both lonely, both in extreme circumstances, both needing someone to just be there and talk to. Doesn't make it right, but I understood it. I loved what you had to say about how she showed the effects on the different communities - the Jewish community (being rounded up and sent away), the Catholic community (those women that were brave enough to hide the Jewish children), and just friends who were looking out for each other. And the fact that the women left behind were fighting the war just as the men were - but in their town and in their homes with daily acts of resistance and small rebellions. Awesome review, Hope!!

Great review! I agree with so much of what you said. I, however, never fully came to "like" Beck. I never trusted him. Parts of me wanted to like him and I love how Hannah humanized the enemy, but I still didn't trust him. I did find that I could understand the confusing feelings Vianne had with Beck. It felt very realistic to me. I found myself crying a TON at the end and whenever a book connects so strongly with my emotions it's a win for me! 5 out of 5!!

I haven't read the book and i intend to, but i can only tell you that you should not get mad at people for falling in love. The thing about falling in love is that you don't get to choose who you fall for. I am Greek and we have two different words about love. One is Love and love is the deep and calm feeling, the one that you know it is still going to be there no matter what. And then we have another word for "falling in love". It is called erotas or eros (έρωτας in greek) and it is that feeling of having a burning desire to see the person. You are scared and happy at the same time and you are anxious and all you just feel like you discovered the universe. Eros goes away after a period of time and love remains, love survives. And if you think of the background and what is happening i suppose they cannot avoid each other. I am saying this assuming that they really care about each other. God, i need to read this book xD You just made it seem so intresting, great review :D

Thanks for doing this review, Hope! It sounds like a book that I would like, but also I appreciate you mentioning the romance thing because infidelity is something that really makes me upset, so knowing that in advance is good.
