Fixing a combination square

As my square was out of alignment (and pretty useless because of that) I decided to have a play to see if I could improve it. In my case the problem seemed to be with the accuracy of the milling of the interior of the stock, and not with the straightness of the ruler or the groove running down the rule being out of parallel with the edge of the rule.

If you've got the same issue this video may help you out. If your problem is the ruler's edge not being straight, or the groove in the ruler not being straight and parallel with the edge, I can't see how you'd fix that without serious effort.

Not sure how long ago this video was made, but it has been a lifesaver for me. My middle schoolers took apart our combination square and I had no idea how to fix it. THANK YOU!!

Matthew, as with so many people commenting below, thank you SO MUCH! I took the rule out of my Stanley square because I needed a temporary 2mm packing piece and could NOT get it back in - until I saw this!

thank you. I spent several hours trying to figure out and searching to learn how to put the rule back in. Fixed it fast after watching your video.

Less than a minute into the video and I was able to insert the ruler back in place. Thank you for this video.

I know it’s 8 years since you posted. But today after watching your video I was able to put my square together. I was having trouble lining up the slot on the ruler to line up with the hold inside. Just couldn’t get the ruler in. Saw they way you did it and there it went. Thank you.

The spring means that the rule does not get so loose it will drop out.
Sanding the bottom of the slot with folded abrasive means you will get a rounded bottom which, bearing against the square edge of the rule, means the registration will vary. So it will never be exact. Better to use a needle file, especially one that only cuts on the edge, not the face. (Yes, you can get them).

I tested my newly aquired combination square with a 4x6 knife edge square, and it was quite a lot out of square. It was only after fiddling around for some time, that I found out that the rule had an insane amount of bow on one side of it (about a whole mm). No amount of fiddling with the stock will fix that!
If only I had access to a plane grinder, I could have it fixed in 10 minutes...

thank you! Feel so dumb now that it's obvious from your video thingthat the top of the screw needs to slide into the groove in the middle of the ruler. I took mine all the way out, fitted it and slid it back down then tightened. This thing had been apart for months till I found your helpful video.

Do not apologize for your work shop. We start out somewhere and your "shop" looks like it might even have been better than mine, fifty years ago. Things have changed, but it remains it took me fifty some years to get to a point I want to be at.

Very good, thanks. For the final quarter mm, maybe try finer paper (e.g.400/600grit wet & dry)? Lost the spring off mine :(
