How I love genuine mysteries like this - in the days where pretty much every spooky/mysterious thing on the Internet is carefully manufactured with YouTube coverage in mind, it's refreshing to see a good old urban legend, even though it doesn't amount to much in this case.

Honestly, I feel like a lot of car commercials are filmed like a horror film but with some up-beat music in the background.

Reminds me of an experimental/proof-of-concept campaign from BMW in 2010. They played a fairly normal commercial on a cinema screen, which unbeknownst to the audience had a stencil BMW logo behind it as well as a high-powered flash behind the stencil. At the end of the commercial (which didn't feature the logo on screen at all), the announcer told the audience to close their eyes... where the logo appeared as an afterimage.

It wasn't something that could really be replicated on TV or without the exact setup they used, but as a conceptual piece it's quite freaky.

I know other people on YouTube have covered this before but I'd love to hear your take on the Akihabara tape! I know it's more lost media than Internet mystery (though it first surfaced online) but it's kind of in the vein of Hitogata, only we have proof that at least the song exists. Hearing a professional translator's opinion on the lyrics and their alleged creepiness would be a nice bonus too

I love your Internet mystery videos! It's funny how people can turn normal things into something spooky & fun honestly. This is just a normal car commercial, but because of people trying to entertain themselves, this commercial has persisted through the ages. Certainly interesting!

It is a rather weird commercial..with all the moving and flashing and cuts. I can understand why it would make people feel weird. I was thinking for a moment that it might have been the catalyst for that Japanese Tire commercial with the jump scare that came out later..

For me it's the quick cuts at the beginning that made it disorienting already. Quite close or akin to the effect of flashing bright lights to people prone to seizures.
Then the scenery looks drab and gloomy.

Go to 4:20 this is the mountain scene which pans to the left. At 4:20, look at the center, there's a dip/v-shape of the mountain. Look up a bit and you'll see trees. Between the trees there's some space which shows the blue sky. The space, combined with the branches/leaves of the trees, makes it look like a portrait of a human being. There's a head and body down to the shoulder that's a product of the blue sky background and the tree's branches and leaves. Do you feel shivers yet?
