The Ethics of Linguistic Democracy in Schools & Society
Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014
Ahmanson Auditorium, Loyola Marymount University
On February 19, 2014, approximately 150 students, faculty members and guests gathered for the 2014 Leavey Presidential Chair Lecture featuring a keynote address by Donaldo Macedo, Ph.D., Ed.D., Distinguished Professor of Liberal Arts & Education, at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Dr. Macedo's work is anchored in linguistics and critical biliteracy. Macedo wrote with Paulo Freire and acted as his translator for several of his last books. His work with Freire broke new theoretical ground in its attempt to develop a critical understanding of the ways in which language, power, and culture contribute to the positioning and formation of human experience and learning.
About the speaker:
Donaldo Macedo, Ph.D., Ed.D. is a Cape Verdean-American critical theorist, linguist, and expert on literacy and education studies. Macedo is professor of English and a Distinguished Professor of Liberal Arts and Education at the University of Massachusetts Boston as well as the founder of the UMB Applied Linguistics Graduate Department. A central figure in critical pedagogy over the last twenty five years, Macedo's work directly challenges the educational experts who seek to keep issues of power and social struggle outside the purview of education. Beyond his groundbreaking collaboration with Paulo Freire, he has published extensively in the areas of linguistics, critical literacy, and bilingual and multicultural education.
