I can't imagine any other country in the world where you have to do your taxes, even though the tax agency knows how much you owe

Hahaha, NOBODY in the US has to file their own taxes, that's what H&R Block is for. 🙂👍

Also, the reason they can't tell you how much taxes you owe before you pay them is because they have no way of knowing how much money you're going to make that year until the end of that year. NOW, it is perfectly logical to ask "then how come they can't send me the amount I owe between January 1st and April 20th?" Yes, that is rather inconvenient, but (again) that's what H&R Block is for 😉

Also, worst case: you file your taxes, but get a return letter from the IRS saying you didn't pay enough (a.k.a. you got "audited"). DON'T PANIC, no problem, this does not go on your criminal record, it just means the IRS is lazy and they don't want to file your taxes for you, but they will do it if you file them yourself but you make a mistake. All you have to do in that case is pay the additional amount that they specify to you. Done deal, no problem - easy. 😎 👍

Now, H&R Block does charge a fee for filing your taxes for you, but (chances are) if you're someone who can't afford to pay that fee, then you're most likely someone who can't afford to pay their taxes either - unfortunately, that's going to fall on you 🙁 But, that would be the case in paying taxes in any country. 🌎 Also, if you're owed a refund after filing, H&R Block can simply deduct their service fee directly from your refund check. Again, done deal, no problem - easy. 😎

You only owe fines and go to prison and face asset-seizures if you just flat-out refuse to pay your taxes. But, again - that is the case in any country on Earth 🌎

Now, as far as the IRS "knowing" if you're on an undertable cash income for a given tax year... lol, they can't really actually "know" that, there is no tool for that. HOWEVER, if you have a bank account and you have cash deposits totaling over the threshold amount during a tax year, then yes - the IRS is able to get a hold of your account statement(s) and audit you for that money. Also, If the taxpayer were getting their income using an app like CashApp (for example), the IRS could also certainly easily obtain a statement of that as well.

I recently received a nice tax refund from HMRC who calculated my pay as you earn tax automatically, I had to do nothing. Gotta love the UK tax system ❤🇬🇧
