Bill Chadwick is a man of many achievements and professions. Originally, a highly touted prospect for the New York Rangers. Chadwick had all his NHL dreams stripped away by an errant puck hitting him in his right eye. Yet, Chadwick would eventually become the first American-born NHL referee, and brought a lively personality that got him nicknamed "The Big Whistle". Chadwick was vocal, and even started the hand signals that we all associate with NHL referees today. After his retirement, he became the color commentator for the New York Rangers, and inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame for his exceptional contributions to the sport of Hockey.

Bill Chadwick used to be the Color Commentator with Jim Gordon on New York Ranger TV broadcasts and he was an entertaining guy in some ways, a homer in others, but he usually always told the truth which made me respect him.

So that's where the hand signals came from! Thanks also for the adoption of Helmets! When people get tired of toothless players the uniform adoption of full face cages. You can still fight, just don't drop your gloves.
