You did it again—found a crucial topic that I’ve never seen any other commentator cover. I’ve been diabetic for 15 years, but, thankfully, the disease in my case is controlled by oral meds. But I will be taking my blood sugar monitor on road trips from now on, thanks to your discussion today. Many riders in your viewing community are better for their exposure to Kraken’s Garage and Adventures. I know I am. Cheers.

Great job on spreading the awareness, Eric! I'm actually T1D myself but never thought to give my experience with it. I wear a backpack on all of my rides with my "go pack" containing a spare pump, insulin vial, glucagon, glucose gel, and a gatorade. I also rock a dexcom CGM with alerts in the helmet.

Its interesting to also note how hormones effect your blood sugar. It effects everyone slightly differently, but I've noticed that my blood sugar will go up due to the "stress" of riding and being aware of my surroundings, so I have a slightly higher basal rate for long rides, unless I'm off-roading in which I tend to get a low because it's more of a workout. Thankfully in great control so haven't had too many instances of a low while riding, but am always prepared just in case.

All good points, very sensible. I'm not insulin dependent, I do have a 12v thermocooler that sits on the passenger seat within a seat bag. It's part of my touring kit, I like carrying milk, water( for coffee) and a cut lunch. The cooler is pugged into a power outlet of the bike. Great topic. Cheers

G’day Eric. Thanks for the wake up! Those of us who enjoy good health may not have considered how those, with life threatening conditions manage their health. I must confess, I have not had reason to think diabetes prior to your video. It will now make me more aware or conscious of others who ride and maybe some of the reasons why they can’t or won’t join in some organised rides. Peace ✌️

Wow... Must say I have never really given this much thought. Have ridden with others who have diabetes and do know we need to stop regularly for meals or snacks.

Sock is a great idea and we all have plenty to use that don't have mates 😁

Important topic Eric. To add my 10 cents worth, I'd like to ask everyone to learn the signs & symptoms of a heart attack & seek emergency aid should they occur. I recently had 2 heart attacks followed by triple bypass surgery 3 weeks ago. I was lucky to survive but sadly many don't even reach the ambulance. Take care of yourselves. Yes, it can happen to you!
