Former J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has sparked a major controversy with his remarks on the execution of Afzal Guru. Abdullah claimed the 2001 Parliament attack convict's execution served no real purpose and expressed opposition to capital punishment. The Bharatiya Janata Party accused Abdullah of appeasement politics, while the National Conference ally, Congress Party, distanced itself from his comments. Afzal Guru was convicted and hanged in 2013 for plotting the Parliament attack.
