Niger revokes military accord with US: what impact for the region? • FRANCE 24 English

Niger's government announced on Saturday (March 16) that it was breaking off "with immediate effect" its military cooperation agreement with the United States, putting US counter-terrorist operations in West Africa at risk. The decision means US military and civilians staff are likely to leave Niger where the US has a major drone base. FRANCE 24's Wassim Nasr tells us more and gives us his analysis.

You say the US dronebase has coverage as far as Lybia since 2012, but such sophisticated terrorist groups still operate effectively within Niger and Mali. It seems those who say the mission is unsuccessful have a point.

First off, if French and American military presence was so effective, then why are there still thousands of these Islamic terrorist in all three countries? Why haven't they been killed off? The Islamic terrorist were killing a bunch of people in these nations BEFORE the military coups. Actually the worst killing in Burkina Faso was "Solhan and Tadaryat massacres". That happened while the French were in the country. Mali hasn't done any worse since the French left. Actually "France 24 English" themselves reported that "Mali junta seizes strategic northern stronghold of Kidal". Who do you think they seized it from? The Islamic terrorist. China sent 300 armored vehicles to Mali and continue to send equipment. They have helped the Mali government kill terrorist without having Chinese bases in the country. Burkina Faso can get weapons from North Korea, Russia, China and other nations. Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso don't need western countries.
