The problem with English speaker learning German is that you can't forget English totally and pick up German. Both have the same root. I still tend to get confused sometimes even though I have learned for a year, still much better than 3 months ago. Übung macht den Meister. Another tip : Look for a friend on Tandem Partner

There was some Vietnamese man in my neighborhood who I caught going through my garbage looking for recyclables. I walked up on him and asked what he was doing and his reply was, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, " with a big smile. I said, "I don't like you going through my garbage cans and he said, "Yeah, yeah, Yeah." I yelled, "NO, NO, NO! I SAID, GTFO!" He kept repeaingt his fake it phrase, but I can definitely say he didn't make it.

I love the idea. It's a bit cringeworthy, though.

I'm literally dyinnng 😂😂😂😂 this is hilarious! She keeps nodding and pretending she understands everything when she clearly doesn't get shit! But what if someone turns the question on her? What's she gonna say? "Ach so? Schade!" 😂😂😂 I think it's a great way to build up confidence in your target language and to actually try and interact with real people since day 1.

Hilarious!! This "fake it until you make it" attitude is fantastic——so many
polyglots preach the virtues of speaking from day one no matter how
little language you have under your belt. I've been studying German on and off as a hobby for almost three years and even though I can get the gist of conversations and pick up lots of details, I'm **terrible** at speaking because I know 9/10 times the other person can understand English (at least here in Berlin!). I'm going to follow Alice's lead from today and try to speak more. Looking forward to seeing how she fakes enough grammar to get to B1 level ;)

I've ALways known SOME German. My dad was born in Germany in 1930, but you wouldn't want to say what he used to say. Believe me. Besides that all of it is from the 30's. He called people Fräulein & never saw it become obsolete. He also called my mom 'weib' and it wasn't a bad word back then.

Those conversations sounds kind of weird but I like that new idea for this channel. Also, that girl look so cute and would be very interesting for us to be able to follow her progress. In conclusion she should make more videos no matter what people say.

German is, in my opinion, my strongest foreign language and I have 2 other foreign languages under my belt as well. Never once have I used this technique. I find that if you do not know what the speaker is saying, try and ask him / her to simplify or slow down e.g. "Ich verstehe das nicht" or "können Sie langsamer bitte sprechen?" Using "Ach so" when someone asks you "Wie geht's Ihnen?" is going to throw them off completely and they'll know almost immediately that you can't speak the language and if it's with a stranger it may make them feel awkward.
