Here's when it was -40: 32:58
Get a lot of questions and some are quick to accuse me of lying about the temperature (no, I never have). Temps are regularly in the -30s here and I camp year-round...it's not a green screen, it's a wood stove. If the title says -30, that's the LOW for the trip...the temp fluctuates, of course.
I made a video for the top 11 FAQs I get about winter camping:
Hope it helps clear some things up.

You probably won't ever read this, but in chance you do I have to say this : You have no idea that you pretty much saved me in a way. I randomly came across your channel while i was searching for soothing stuff on YT to calm my spontaneous severe IBS flare ups, and for some unknow reason, your videos make me feel so much better. Your cinematic abilities, the way you talk, do things is so soothing and calming and stoic at the same time, it's contagious, as someone said " Calm is contagious " . Jon, from the bottom of my heart, and my gut (😂😂), Thank you Man, may you take us on many more journeys. Bless you Man, bless you.

Good trip. Those holes in the snow you found on your walk around the lake are overnight ruffed grouse roosts/beds. They bury themselves in soft snow for its insulating properties. They usually defecate before leaving their beds. That's what you found. The impressions in the snow near the holes are made by their wings at take off.

Can hear that uniquely crunchy snow we get past -30. The different between -30 and -40 is incredibly noticeable! You’re a braver man than I!

Can I just say that I'm grateful you pulled the extra wood off the ice? WELL done...leave no trace. Kudos

Dude! I just wanted to thank you for the opportunity to watch your amazing adventures in the North. I was heavily affected by your work as soon as I discovered your channel around 4 years ago. I was in a very difficult place in my life at the time. I think the most difficult in my life. Watching you exploring the wilderness in the way you do is inspiring. You approach it with such humility, and respect while showing good humour and positivity in the face of the nastiest bugs, weather, and portages the North has to offer. It gave me hope in a hopeless time in my life. It got me out there; into the wilderness again! Following in your footsteps sometimes. Sometimes finding my own way. Thank you Jon. Thank you so much. Now I am starting to post my own videos. Learning along the way. Loving it!! I still watch everything you post. I love watching you and Erin too. You're a great pair!!
Thanks again!
Cheers!

I love the sound that walking on snow at -25° or so makes. Just as a cup of hot cocoa listening to the wind is more soothing to sleep in than anything else I know of.

Tenting in minus 40 Celsius, on a lake! You are an animal!
The nighttime view with the chimney shooting out a vertical plume of smoke with the constellation Orion in the background was beautiful.
And nothing beats the crunching sound of snow under your feet at - 40.

Watching this from the panhandle in Florida. It was actually 35° this morning, cold for us 😉 I enjoy your videos so much!! You put a lot of hard work into them and I just wanted to say thank you ❤️ My brother passed on in 2021 and he loved to fish!! We’re originally from Colorado, so watching your videos makes me feel him around me. Sending love to you and all your viewers ❤️

Grouse sleep under the snow because it's a good insulator. In the morning they fly off leaving a hole in the snow, with poop at the bottom. You may have noticed the tracks and marks, where the wings hit the snow.

The still image at 6:42 is so beautiful, homey and calm. Speaking of what smells more appetising than cooking onions, id say garlic frying is a close second. Your video is a combination of some of the most pleasing things, like staying warm and cosy indoors while watching out a window where outside is raining or snowing, the cracking of wood in a campfire, the sound of hot water pouring into cocoa powder… it feels so reassuring. It’s very kind and considerate of u to handle the fish captured so gently l, and ensure it stayed in the water instead of lifting it up. ❤

As a fellow winter camping enthusiast bring a couple foam tiles with you next time to put under your stove. It will reduce the amount of ice that melts and pools that you have to scoop away

I've never winter camped and at this stage don't have this desire. But, I love living vicariously through you Jon. Just being that exposed and close to death conditions is inspiring. You need plenty of trust in your gear and ability to do this sort of thing. It's crazy to think of how the native Americans, Innuits and other northern peoples survived this stuff.

Hi John, those holes in the snow are made by Grouse. They do that at night to stay worm. It was -38 here in Algonquin Park that night you hit -40. OMG That's damm cold.

The holes in the snow are where grouse stayed under the snow to escape the cold. The wing prints are where they flew away. We call them partridge where I live.

About 10 years ago I had the pleasure to visit Canada and spend 7 days in Algonquin Park. Your videos take me back to this time. Unfortunately you cant really compare the nature in central Europe to the nature you have in Canada. Thanks for posting those amazing and inspirational videos Jon!

I’ve decided to convert my childhood treehouse turned tiny house into a rental space. It needs a lot of work but it’s a step towards a future life in tiny alternative living that I want to pursue. You both motivate me to continue my vanlife, tiny house, off grid way of life and maybe a spinning wheel is just the key! Keep kicking ass and motivating your pack!
