Seat belts have been instrumental in saving countless lives over the years. However, early seat belts were totally different from the current design.

In this video, we have explained the 2-point support system and the current 3 point support system. The key notion of 3 point seat belts is to help the persons to avoid all 3 types of collision.

There is a specific component called retractors which locks the seat belt right when a collision occurs.

There are 3 types of retractors,

Inertia/Non-Locking Retractors - This is a passive system that locks your seatbelts when a collision occurs but does not lock under normal circumstances.

Centrifugal/Emergency Locking System - It is a locking mechanism that uses centrifugal force to lock the seat belt. Hence you can’t pull the seat belt forcefully as centrifugal locks the frame.

Pretensioners - The pretensioner system has a small explosive charge. When a collision occurs, the explosive will also trigger the airbag module pulling the seat belt backwards preventing the passenger from being flung forward.
