Agricultural development in the Liwa Oasis, near Kayyam, United Arab Emirates, has boomed in recent decades. In the mid-1980s, farmland covered just over 3.8 square miles (10 square kilometers) in this area, and by 2002 had more than doubled to 8.1 square miles (21 square kilometers). Since the UAE averages 12 days of rain a year and contains less than 1% arable land, there is widespread use of drip irrigation and greenhouses in this area.
