Masters Studies were the old orthodox method of learning to paint. Taking master pieces and copying them in order to reverse engineer the old masters' techniques.

For comics and cartooning, this method was eschewed almost totally because of how quickly and soundly it can hobble an artist's growth, but if you approach it the right way, nothing increases your understanding of other artists' methods or their visual vocabulary faster.

(The other quickest method to increasing your visual vocabulary is drawing from life.)
