What I got after reading / hearing this interview is that the Russo brothers almost removed Peter Parker from Spiderman.

Not Only did Downey have the foresight that this iteration of Spider-Man was going to be huge. But he knew Tom was the right kid for Peter Parker and he stuck is neck out for him, and not a lot of people in Hollywood do that kind of thing. It really Shows Downey's true character.

Downey has had his ups and downs, and had other people in the industry do things for him. He understands what giving a guy a break can mean for a person.
At some point I expect him to direct or produce and give us another generation of actors.
