A Journey Through Antwerp Central: The Railway Cathedral

Thanks for the music Yarin Primak: Ghost Train

As I prepared to travel from Antwerp, Belgium, to Eindhoven, Netherlands, I found myself with an hour to spare at the stunning Antwerp Central Train Station. After confirming my ticket and platform number with the station attendant, I set out to explore this architectural marvel.

Antwerp Central, often referred to as the "Railway Cathedral," opened in 1905, designed by Louis Delacenserie. The station features a breathtaking blend of Neo-Renaissance, Neo-Baroque, and Art Nouveau styles. Its most striking feature is the enormous 75-meter-high dome, which creates a majestic, cathedral-like atmosphere.

I wandered through the vast hall beneath the dome, marveling at the intricate details and eclectic design. This station, with its four levels of tracks, is not only functional but also one of the most beautiful railway layouts in the world.

Plus they provide a little free entertainment.

Between 1998 and 2007, it underwent extensive restoration to accommodate high-speed trains like the Thalys and Eurostar, blending historical charm with modern convenience.

After soaking in the grandeur, I boarded what I thought was the correct train. To be sure, I asked a local passenger if it went to Eindhoven. She said no, so I quickly got off, only to realize too late that it was actually my train. A valuable lesson: always check the final destination on the platform sign. Aaand locals might not know all the stops, and Europe's vast network can be confusing.

Despite the mix-up, I eventually made it to Eindhoven. But the experience left me with a newfound appreciation for the beauty and complexity of Antwerp Central.

This station, a popular filming location for movies like "The Tourist," once housed an aviary and small zoo in the early 20th century, adding to its rich history.

Ranked among the world's most beautiful train stations, Antwerp Central is more than a transit hub; it's a cultural and historical landmark. Its stunning architecture and public art make any visit a memorable experience, capturing the grandeur of railway travel in the heart of Antwerp.
