I had Lincoln Logs as a kid. They’re fun. But there’s also another way to use wood for children’s projects.

An enterprising young man could make free-form Lincoln Logs out of branches gathered from a forest. Just find reasonably straight branches and cut them into six inch long pieces. Sand each piece, and you’re done.

The kit might come with plastic clips for joining the logs together. And a book with drawings for buildings, etc.
Nobody makes anything in America anymore because of the unions, so this might be a nice change.
