Chinese President Xi Jinping has pledged to create “at least” one million jobs in Africa as he seeks to position Beijing as the development partner of choice for the Global South.
Speaking at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation on Thursday, Xi said Beijing would provide African countries $51bn in new financing, including loans and “various types of assistance”, and support 30 infrastructure projects to boost connectivity across the continent.
“We have together built roads, railways, schools, hospitals, industrial parks and special economic zones. These projects have changed the lives and destiny of many people,” Xi told visiting African leaders in Beijing, according to the state-run Xinhua News Agency.
Xi said that the Chinese and African people working together could “accomplish new and even greater feats” and spearhead the “modernisation” of the Global South.

Just a question for Al Jazeera news channel: Why invite a 'Western' person to opinionate on a topic that's none of their immediate business or concern? What are the motives behind this?

We all know who brought roads and hospitals to Africa and who brought landmines and bombs.
We also can see who is helping African countries to cooperate and stay together as one united African continent by organizing such an event. And who is trying to divide the African countries and see African countries fighting each other.

Only 1 million? Modi a few years back promised 100 million manufacturing jobs for Indians in India, but sure, just as his numerous other promises, none realized, instead, India lost 35 million jobs in manufacturing since 2017 from over 60 million to 27 million now.

Africa’s partnership with China has become a huge part of the continent’s growth story in recent years. China has poured investments into building roads, airports, and schools, making a real difference that many African countries appreciate. Unlike the old colonial powers that invaded and took resources, China focuses on trade and development, helping Africa progress without that same painful past.

When African nations deal with the West, it often feels different. Negotiations tend to come with strings attached—like demands for privatization or lectures on human rights—with promises that sometimes don’t materialize. Many African leaders feel that these deals don’t put their people’s needs first, and instead, they seem to trap the continent in dependency on organizations like the IMF and World Bank. Projects can be bogged down by bureaucracy or loaded with conditions that seem to benefit big corporations more than local economies.

A perfect example of the West’s approach is when U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson came to Africa to warn countries against working with China. Ironically, he landed at an airport built by Chinese firms, traveled on roads they constructed, and spoke in a building funded by China. Despite the warnings, many African leaders continue to favor China’s straightforward investments over the West’s more complicated and conditional offers.

When the West does engage with Africa, it’s often in countries with valuable resources. It’s a familiar story: nations like Libya under Gaddafi or Iraq under Saddam Hussein, when they tried to break free from Western financial dominance, quickly faced military intervention. In Africa, if a country has oil or other prized resources, Western-backed organizations may offer loans, but it’s often corporations like Exxon, BP, or Shell that ultimately benefit from those resources. And in extreme cases, if African leaders push too hard, military interventions can happen. After the dust settles, Western contractors move in to "rebuild" the country, while the true wealth flows out.

China has already increased its investment in Africa, and it now depends on how the G7 responds.

Britain's Debt Justice charity found in a 2022 study, based on World Bank figures, that more African governments' external debts were being owed to Western banks, asset managers and oil traders (35%) than to Chinese lenders (12%). It also found that interest rates charged on western private loans (5%) were almost double that of Chinese loans (2.7%) and that "the most indebted countries were less likely to have their debt dominated by China".

Unlike visiting west for meeting ONLY.
During every visit, China bring them(leader/minister) to visit factories, new tech farming, ...etc.
When they return home, they will send people to China to learn to develop Africa.
China willing to teach and help.

They care Africa people even more than their own. Millions of Chinese young people lose their jobs, graduates cant find jobs and they cover the fact, deny any conversation over this situation.
The funniest thing is there is no video about this assistance to Africa in bilibili. Why not brag about nice things you done unless

That's great, but the youth unemployment in China is 17% or more. I think China should focus on its domestic affairs first. I've heard that even people with master's and/or doctorate degrees can't find good jobs.

That is good for Africa people, but Africa needs to caution about Chinese investment. Do not become SriLanKa case, China built the port for SriLanka then SriLanka could not pay interest for loan, so they have to rent port 100 years back to China. So China can export and import their merchandise to the world. If Africa wants China investment, you should loan for building manufacturer where they can produce merchandise to sell to the World such as steel factory or textile factory, or universities for youth. Also, they need to ask China shows the technology to their workers as China asked for Western companies when they invest to China.
