A driver was surrounded by smoke and flames as he drove near Lillooet, British Columbia, where an “out-of-control” wildfire raged on Tuesday.

Footage taken by Cory Sterritt shows him driving through thick smoke as he passes by flames on his way back from work.

The British Columbia Wildfire Service said the McKay Creek Fire displayed aggressive fire behaviour and rapid growth due to the “hot and dry weather” on Tuesday evening.

The wildfire had grown to around 12,000 acres by Tuesday, according to fire authorities.

I live here, and we’re currently ready to leave our homes to a forest fire that was confirmed as human caused.

Do not think that the driver is stupid for ending up driving thru this. Wildfires can be crazy unpredictable. It sounds like this guy was on his way home from work, probably out in the bush (why you can hear a two way radio in the truck). Fire probably came up so fast and they had to high tail it out. And the closer the fire starts to where you live or work the less time you have to get out if it starts traveling (especially with strong winds). We’ve had evacuation alerts with several hours warning of possibility of evacuation to having 5 minutes notice to just get out of our house. You can even get different fires coming from different directions to make evacuation even tougher.

Reminds me of 2016s Prince Albert fire I lived in Saskatchewan before I moved to Calgary Alberta in Saskatoon the smoke in 2016 was orange and thick.

Ok, Lillooet. Yes, horrible country to fight fires in. Very difficult terrain.

Do not turn on your high beams while driving through smoke. It will make it harder to see

They are lucky. The first time I drove into Oklahoma I saw signs that said 'Do not drive into smoke'. I thought, 'what does that mean?' What it means is that prairie fires can be so large you will die of smoke inhalation before you can drive out the other side. The same is true for some forest fires.
