‘It’s Bisan From Gaza, And This Ramadan We’re Praying In The Rubble’

Ramadan is supposed to be a spiritual and joyous month, but for most Palestinians in Gaza, it doesn’t feel like Ramadan at all. People are searching for water, overpaying for canned food and praying next to destroyed mosques, as video journalist Bisan Owda shows us.

Many people in Gaza were already only eating one meal a day. Now, one mother is burning schoolbooks to cook basic food for iftar, the meal that breaks the fast. Sometimes the markets have fresh food, but the prices are so high most people can’t afford it.

Families are missing their loved ones during a time usually meant for gathering. Some have been killed in Israeli airstrikes, while others have been taken captive by Israeli soldiers. And people in Rafah, near the Egyptian border, are breaking their fasts under the constant buzzing of Israeli drones above their heads.

There’s a lot of info coming out on Gaza, so we created a WhatsApp channel where we hand-pick the stories we think you should be paying attention to.

Her posts show how horrible things are, yet how beautiful and resilient the people of Palestine are. I’m always SO relieved every time I see her post. So happy she’s still with us. She deserves a Pulitzer award for her coverage.

Mashallah.
What the boy said at the end.
This war won't make us flinch.
It will end just as it emerged.
Subahanallah.

I am from Trinidad and Tobago Bisan in the caribbean. Last night we observed one of the odd nights of ramadhan in the last ten nights. We made dua for Palestine to get food, water, medicine and for victory over your oppressors. Every juma, every tahajjud.

What amazes me is even in war. The people there are not looting or raiding among themselves. It shows culture and humanity of the people.

Dear Bisan, I am a big fan all the way from Canada and want to say thank you for showing the world the reality of this one sided war with so much grace! You are an amazing journalist and may you find strength and courage to continue. I am a kindergarten teacher, and watching that little girl rip pages from her most treasured books to light a fire so her family can have iftar, just brought tears to my eyes.
