In 1903 a tiny isolated island called Yap was discovered 1700km off the coast of the Philippines in the Pacific Ocean utilizing massive 12ft tall circular stones called “Fei” or “Rai” Stones which were used as an extremely unique form of money, acting as a precious metal like gold or silver. The stones were extremely hard to obtain (450km away from Yap on the island of Palau) requiring a 30 day straight canoe to haul the stones. Like gold and silver, the massive Rai Stones were rare and extraordinarily hard to obtain. The case is well chronicled in the book “Money: The Unauthorized Biography--From Coinage to Cryptocurrencies” by Felix Martin
