Khelpur was under the control of Adil Shah of Bijapur. Shivaji Maharaj wanted to conquer the fort but the terrain of the fort was difficult. Conquering the fort was easier said than done. Shivaji Maharaj attacked the fort but the Adilshahi army on the fort was defending the fort bravely. Then, Shivaji Maharaj came up with a plan.

Accordingly a group of Marathas climbs the fort and convinces the Adilshahi commander (Khundarala) that they are not satisfied with Shivaji Maharaj's rule and hence they have come to serve Adilshah. The Marathas were successful and the very next day they mutinied and the fort was in complete confusion.Simultaneously Shivaji Maharaj attacked the fort from outside and captured the fort in no time. Shivaji Maharaj named the fort Vishalgarh.

The fort today remains in ruins except for the Dargah.
The fort was built in 1058 AC by Shilahar Raja 'Marsingh'. was built in Initially he named it 'Khilgil'. Gavan's officer Karn Singh Bhosale and his son Bhimsimha captured the fort with the help of Ghorpad i.e. giant monitor lizards. Bhimsingh was then given the title of Ghorpade.
In 1489, Yusuf Adil Shah separated himself from the Bahamani Empire along with the areas under his command and established an independent sultanate at Bijapur. Hence, this fort was associated with the Adil Shahi Sultanate. In 1659, Shivaji Maharaj captured the fort with the help of the fort officer.
