Boy I can't wait for my friendless forever-alone butt to get absolutely curb-stomped into oblivion because a Galleon two islands over can fire a cannon and suddenly four randos teleport onto my deck and blunder-yeet me from Port Merrick all the way to Morrow's Peak, probably while also hooting like Daffy Duck.

I will only accept the grapple gun IF I can roll up my ladders. Solo sloop with no 1-shot kill weapons and now grappling vs larger crews is becoming impossible.

The naval aspect of the game and shooting cannons is what makes it unique. Instead of making naval more rewarding and buffing it, Rare is actually doing the opposite. The grapple gun should just be a transversal tool (not a weapon!) and shouldn't be allowed to pull players or board a boat. Rare is ruining their own game and whoever is taking these decisions shouldn't play the game at all!

am i the only one thinking that the mermaid shrines are gonna be the easiest loot method with this gun. you can like instantly skip every puzzle and zoom to the top where the loot is in some of them

I’d argue naval combat is already heavily discouraged with one person uninterrupted bailing making you basically unsinkable. This is just gonna ruin it more.

Call me crazy but I think the gameplay and movement mechanics already here needs slowed down. The speeding up isn’t sustainable and will further scare away new less skilled players who we need to… you know… keep the game alive? People are already teleporting around like maniac houseflies with a grudge to hold. SoT PvP as it is right now is literally the opposite of what I think of when I think about pirates. I don’t feel like a swashbuckling rouge when In PvP, I feel like a Valorant player.

Every update seems to punish solo players, if this is making it's way then we really need Sloop only servers soon. It's already almost impossible to enjoy solo sloopin. Another nail in the coffin for the sloop.

As someone who only ever plays solo, that thing will make playing the game impossible. Dealing with duo's and brigs is already hard enough. I really don't know if I'll keep playing the game after it's released. They need to throw it out. It's nothing but a problem and a bad idea.

They could make it so once it’s attached to for example a ship you have to wind yourself in, like when you use a fishing rod.

Would be fun getting towed by other boats and even the Meg, or hanging and swinging from a mast.

Also you could be able to detach the harpoon of someone trying to get onto your boat by using a similar mechanism to detaching rowboats.

I find it quite funny that the devs are adding this in. It shows how truly little they even play the game and how little they understand the community

"We don't want it we don't need it" is pretty accurate lol. I have just recently started to learn PvP and this is throwing me off big time, no pun intended. People already neglect naval and we're already dealing with blunderbuss and crud launching and hating it. Imagine if they listened.

I gotta finish my hourglass curse grind before season 14.

I refuse to deal with the grapple gun hourglass!

Also, keep in mind that horn of fair winds is now guaranteed in shrine quests, which can be very disgusting (constant player popcorn for at least 2 minutes). The new SoT is all about air time now...

Its truly facinating how the rare developers manage to break the game further with every update !!!

i dont remember where, but i saw a comment about replacing the harpoon with a boarding ax, a new melee weapon that you can use to climb peoples ship (with a very loud sound cue) and that you can use to put holes in their hull (or your own) once inside. it would do more damage than the sword but be slower, and it would finally give us a new purely melee weapon

I like the idea of the grapple gun taking both weapon slots, that way you can still get on board but you'll have a much harder time once you're on, making its priority to get a players anchor down or something, or just to cause mischief

I would make it work as advertised at short ranges but only gives you a tug towards the ship at anywhere but near point blank. This way it’s only 100% effective if you manage to get close in the first place.

And as for the ladder part I would also make the boarding animation relatively long so that defenders have a chance to process it.

Player: we want pirate stuffs, like axes
Rare: f*ck it, hooks

The grapple gun will be very fun on my duo nights, HOWEVER...

I won't enjoy getting boarded by 4 people at once when I'm solo. That'll NOT be fun, since the new blunder can throw me off my ship easily.

If it became more like a rapel, it could work more like how Rare want it to *without* causing all of these issues.

Personally, I think:
- Remove ability to yoink loot / players. (as stated in video with athena chest scenario, this greatly unbalances it)

- Make the hook only able to anchor onto ledges (the top rim of the ship, top of cliffs, etc.), so you can't subvert fall damage nor board from mid-air.

- Give the hook a climbing rate, but have it be a bit faster than the ship's ladder. As it's a harpoon GUN, firing it makes a loud bang, so the crew under attack have a second or two to try and find it so they can defend their ship from the boarder. This doesn't make the ship ladder void, as using this is considerably quieter and would still be the only viable boarding method if you want to do so undetected. Thus, the hook gun is more of a high-risk, high reward option that trades stealth for being able to board (almost) anywhere on deck.

- Give it only one charge. It can be used for a board or to climb a cliff-face, but then can't be used again until you find an ammo crate. This way, fast pirates can use it to board, disrupt, snag a restock from the enemy ship's ammo crate, then possibly fire the hook again from the ship's deck up to the crow's nest for a second to heal or something. It being a little faster than ladders means that if you're using it for a brief getaway, you can do so without getting slashed off of it as would you if you took the ladder. Such a getaway could also be performed if your own ship was close enough, wherein the hook grabs onto your ship and you're pulled off of the enemy's deck and swing down to your hull at the water level, and have to climb up onto your own ship. By having to climb your own, your getaway could be spoiled by a keen pirate with good aim, keeping it as balanced as possible.

I know this is probably a big rework for Rare, but ultimately I feel its worth it, and the fact it's not a guaranteed win tool makes it more fun for both parties involved

I'm relieved to hear that opinion. I'm excited to finally get something from Rare (I just happened to notice yet another No Man's Sky update video a few minutes ago, and I thought about how funny it is that a non-live service game provides more substantial and frequent updates than a live service game). But this addition raises only concerns, especially as a solo player who regularly faces crews of superior number (4 players with harpoon guns vs me ? lol - Makes solo-sloopers servers as an option an absolute emergency). I truly hope they are right about their vision, but as a veteran, watching SoT change over the past few years makes me feel the same way I felt about Star Wars after Disney bought it.
