50% yield does not mean 50% throwaway. This just means that 50% of the chips will have defects. So more chip of section of it turned off.(like 3090 TI(full core) vs 3090 or 4080 vs 4070)

It's mainly because Apple gobbled up a huge chunk of TSMCs 3nm process for the A17 Pros on the iPhone 15 Pro lineup and the upcoming M3 Macs.

Also TSMCs yields are also rock bottom on 3nm, which is why Apple pushed back the M3 Macs to next year.

I’m done with Nvidia. The last card I bought, and still run is a EVGA 1080 Ti. I’ll be buying AMD really soon because it’s about time to replace the 1080 Ti.

I won't be buying a new gpu until about 2030. My rtx 2080 still works, and Rust updates are about 10 years behind anything with Ray Tracing.

Using 2 different companies to produce their chips is a very common practice, it's something a lot of companies do because it brings many benefits, like potentially reduce costs and time, and by diversifying they make sure that if something bad happens to one factory or there are issues with the export etc. They still have chips to manufacture their graphics cards.
Of course this sometimes creates some issues like some we have seen in smartphones where the SoC made by one company performs worse than the one from the other, or the screen panel comes with more issues than the other etc.

since i got a 4070, i cant really see the need to upgrade to a 50 series. its gonna be a while before games are too demanding for 40 series cards.

the reason they keep moving around is they want tsmc but may have to settle for samsung for production volume since apple is gloming all the tsmc 3nm

3nm already being so close to consumer market is wild and High end cards still don't really feel that much faster in general. I think the largest holdup in the last several years has been software technologies
