In this interview series, I interview IR scholars about their preferred theoretical perspectives. The idea is to get a brief account of why scholars have come to appreciate a certain IR theory through a short interview.

In this video, I have the honor to interview Dr. Salvatore Babones. I hope you enjoy!

Some of the work we touch upon:
Babones, Salvatore, and John H. S. Aberg. “Globalization and the Rise of Integrated World Society: Deterritorialization, Structural Power, and the Endogenization of International Society.” International Theory 11, no. 3 (2019): 293–317.

Babones, Salvatore. “What Is World-Systems Analysis? Distinguishing Theory from Perspective.” Thesis Eleven 127, no. 1 (2015): 3–20.

Wow, interesting, the notion that the rise of suburbia and the necessity of their shopping malls eventually lead to China's economic rise...but obviously such malls preclude China's manufacturing prowess so I wonder about the mechanism(s) involved in initially re-shoring, to use the contemporary term, manufacturing to China from, presumably, Hong Kong and Taiwan??

For example, the Plaza Accords have inadvertently moved Japanese manufacturing to China though the intention was only to provide American carmakers a reprieve. So what exactly caused manufacturing to flow to China even before WTO ascension?
