I wasn't a jay-z fan until this album came put because I only knew his singles with foxy brown and I didn't care about drug dealing or platinum chains. I was listening to mobb deep dmx and nas. Its crazy looking back how many different versions of jay z there was.

Reasonable Doubt is Jay-Z's best work, but this album took him into the top tier of rap artists. Jay made fans cross over to him.

Hard Knock Life was really the first album for all of us. It felt like the first album. It was more professional and modern day etc. Reasonable Doubt, and Vol 1. were incredible pieces of art, especially Reasonable Doubt, but they felt like another world. Like underground albums, or mixtapes. HKL, was the First Album.

I wish it was still up but there was an article on the NARAS website with a producer/songwriter who was talking about schooling Jay on how to move in the industry as far as how to take small advances and negotiate for points. This was the album that came out after that article and this is when Jay started making moves in the industry. Also got to say R.I.P. to DJ Mark the 45 King who just passed and produced “Hard Knock Life”! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

Everyone loves early 2000s Jay: The Black Album, The Blueprint 1 & 2, and Kingdome Come. For me peak Jay Z is late 90s run. First 4 albums: Reasonable Doubt, Vol 1, 2, & 3.
All fire!🔥
