On this day 4th February 1888 what was possibly the world's first environmental protest took place against the Rio Tinto owned mines in the Huelva region of Spain.
The protest was called by the League Against Calcinations. Early environmental protest pioneers. They had concerns about the open air pyrite roasting that was taking place at the mine. The sulphurous fumes were causing acid rain, health issues, agricultural issues and constant dust and smoke.
Around 12, 000 were at the protest. Farmers, miners, men women and children. They were dispersed by the local cavelry regiment who managed to shoot and bayonet around 200 of them.
Rio Tinto has the same regard for workers and local populations today as it had back in 1888. Bougainville. Grasberg. Juukan Gorge. Jadar. And next on the target is Finland
