Not many shipwrights can say “I got my bowsprit at the Salvation Army”

I’ve spent most of my adult life at sea and I think that Tally Ho is one of the most meticulously built vessels I’ve ever seen. Part of me think it should be in a museum to show future generations how to build the perfect boat but In my heart I know she has to go to sea.

I will never get over how shockingly beautiful all of the woodwork on the Tally Ho is. Just impeccable.

"Bob, you're about to be all of our uncles"....
"You know what they say... Third Time unlucky... Fourth time the charm"...
All joking aside, that bowsprit turned out to be a beautiful hunk of historic timber. The fact that it has a story as old as Tally Ho just adds to the story.

“The first bit of the boat that you tend to poke into other boats when you’re racing” 😂😂😂😂 priceless. If you’re gonna poke’em, at least make the pokey bit look fabulous!

Leo, it amazes me every time I watch one of your videos how far Tally Ho has come since the very beginning !! As A Fan of your project, I have really enjoyed Learning along with those like me, what it takes to be A Boat Builder !!! I would have never realized how difficult and detailed it is to build a boat like Tally Ho from The Ground Up !!! Every time i watch a new video I learn More and More, and CAN NOT WAIT for Tally Ho to Finally Sail !!! Don`t ever stop being who you are, you have brought The Craft of Boat Building to A Lot of people, and somewhere there are people who will want to do what you and the people who have helped build Tally Ho, have done !! You undoubtedly have Inspired Younger People to Start A Venture like you have !!! Keep It Up Leo !!!! Your The Best

Here in Australia and New Zealand, it was customary to use Oregon Pine (Douglas Fir) beams around 15” by 5” as the mounting for sheep-shearing shed shaft-drives. Every old shearing shed in Australia and New Zealand has these beams in them - thousands of them. They would mostly be over 100 years old now. Beautifully seasoned and of the highest quality.
Shaft-drive systems are no longer made for sheep-shearing, so the beams are becoming obsolete as the systems wear out. Hundreds of shearing sheds are abandoned now, complete with shaft-drives and beams.

Thumbs up to Bob. It's a lot harder to put wood back than it is to remove it. "Sneaking uo" on something with a precise fit is something that is often needed in a number of crafts. The entire boat is like a giant piece of fine furniture and the practice is not unheard of in that trade either. Great job!

In all these years, in all these videos, Leo has had a cheerful demeanor and a smile on his face. In this episode I noticed his eyes smiling too! Well done Sampson Boat Co! Getting there!

I always like to see old timbers recycled, the fact that the bow sprit will be as old as Tally Ho is awesome! Also cool is launching a quad copter of a ship that was originally built before helecopters were inveted. Looking at the arial shot, she is going to be something to behold under full canvas!

Well Done You can't beat Douglas Fir.
Our house is 75 yrs old. All of the framing is Doug Fir. It was a "kit" house and assembled by an established contractor who built it for his own family. An interesting thing I've found is ever piece of wood I've had chance to look at is stamped with a "part no. and name". The most incredible fact: The ceiling joist (2x8's) are one piece. That makes them 28' long. Yep, 28' long. The house frame is 28 X 56.

That drone shot backing away from the bowsprit and the outro planted a little vision in my mind of drone shots in the future of Tally Ho at sea. She's just so pretty! Cannot wait to see her fully rigged.

Is Bailey doing all the varnish and paint work? If so she is the unsung hero. All the finishes look perfect. The Douglas fir story is amazing. Old Doug fir is a treasure. Worth the trouble to salvage times 50.

It's refreshing to see a small bit of struggle! So often everything looks so flawless and effortless, which I know isn't always the case. Fantastic work everyone!

In Bobs defense, his work on the rail was spot on. The “issue” arose due to the 9 coats of varnish. Essentially, you made the bow sprit larger in diameter.

Great leadership, Leo. No histrionics, just patient guidance and let the result come. Nice job well done by all. Thanks for sharing.

It was interesting hearing the history of the bowsprit lumber ~ that it came out of an old building being demolished. Thanks for posting.

I surmise that many and probably most here don't know just how hard it is to achieve such a remarkable degree of perfection in the varnish finish on the bowsprit. As with so many of the other steps in Tally Ho's rebuild there are many opportunities to get it wrong. Leo and the guys get it right. I'm shaking my head in awe and admiration.
