Join Kathryn Kermode in her Wild Backyard as she introduces one of nature’s most enigmatic creatures – the Saunders Case Moth, also known as the Large Bagworm.

These moths weave cocoons from silk, leaves, and twigs, creating a home and armour they carry everywhere.

At any sign of danger, the grub retreats into its cocoon, sealing the entrance until the threat has passed.

The caterpillars live in their cocoon for 1-2 years before pupating into their short lived adult form.

Remarkably, the adult female never leaves her cocoon. She lacks wings and cannot fly, so she stays inside, emitting pheromones and waiting for a male to find her.

Adult males on the other hand are striking, with black wings and vibrant orange and black fluffy bodies.

The Case Moth, is an expert weaver and master of stealth, and it’s a marvel of the natural world, a reminder of the mystery that nature holds.
