Me not good at math but me good at liking videos and watching ads!!!

fun fact for ya'll. Physicists with computer science skills are some of the highest paid data scientists. If you have a degree in physics, know statistics and a programming language, you're making the equivalent of $110k in nowheresville or you're being underpaid.

I can't even begin to say how happy I am with this video. Being a Mathematics and Physics double major, I think that going for a math bachelor degree alone won't be enough for a math centered job (they might be more likely to be hired if they are good at programming and computers in general, but if not, having a math degree would need a minor or double major in something that can be applied to the real world, like finance or economics). It does make you look smart though, but getting that job is still a challenge if you don't have a strong foot in the door and everything else for the job. In fact, my father had a Physics PhD and that didn't give him a job. It was more of certain particular engineering classes that he took for his master's degree that got him in.

Applied Mathematics is different from Pure Mathematics. When I was getting my undergrad, most of my classmates majored in Pure Mathematics because they wanted to be math teachers. The exam for Math Ed at my school was very difficult; it was easier to get a license after graduating instead of taking the exam at my school.
Is funny too that my computer science friends are not good at math. I never understood that, but again, mathematicians created computer science.

I’m currently pursuing a statistics degree with an actuarial focus and I didn’t know that less than a 1000 people a year graduate with either. Great video overall!

As a math major I found this very thought provoking. I was going between a business or IT minor for a long time, but eventually settled on getting an AS in Financial Technology. My plan is to graduate with a BS in Applied Math, a Concentration in Statistics, and AS in FinTech. I’m thinking about being an Actuary, but don’t know if I’ll have enough business skills. I hope I made the right choice picking FinTech over business.

Oh my god Shane. You actually took the time to respond to every comment which was in need of a response? I am humbled! I can't believe that you went through each of them in so little time. Great job! Take this from a Mathematics and Statistics graduate working towards their degree in Actuarial Science whilst being a self taught DevOps technician and Data Scientist working two part-time jobs in the mist of school. Your dedication is uncanny. I wish there was more I could do to appreciate your efforts on top of a like and subscribe.

Request: Best Masters Degrees. Also great video!

A statistics degree may have some overlap with a (pure) mathematics degree but I wouldn't say that they are too similar. A (pure) mathematics degree focuses on logic, proofs and rigorous arguments, and topics like mathematical analysis, geometry, (abstract) algebra, topology, as well as number theory, set theory, symbolic logic, group theory, etc. -- a statistics degree almost certainly does not focus on those. There is also the applied mathematics degree which may or may not be adjoined with the statistics degree depending on the college/university.

Im starting my gradute degree in mathematical economics after summer. So excited, since it is a really good mixture of both pure mathematics and applied maths.

A few things: when you look at the percentage growth, consider the jobs available (BLS).

Physics is not the hardest major. In terms of difficulty, it is Pure Mathematics. While the notation is hard to grasp in Physics, the majority of the time your are given a formula. You put your results in and voala! The algorithm worked and you're done.

On pure mathematics you deal with notation, problem solving, and the abstraction. It takes hours to undertand concepts, the proofs are sometimes impossible, and the topics dive into laws behind the logic of mathematics.

This is not to say Pure Math is the hardest major. That rank I'd give it to engineers. While their material isn't as bad as in pure Math or Physics, the workload is bad.

I had the chance to explore the 3 careers and in my school, there are only 3 Pure Math students, many more Physics, and the Majority Engineering.

Would be fun to have a "tournament of the degrees" a week long event where we look at statistics and vote for the best degree?

Computer science is like exact middle between a math and a tech degree. You have to learn so much math and abstract/theoretical stuff for a computer science degree, not every single ounce of it is application based. Most of it is, but a lot of what you learn in a computer science degree is theory. My school even has it in the college of arts and sciences where it is listed as a mathematical science (alongside mathematics and statistics) instead of the college of engineering and technology

Shane: Don’t study degrees with the word “studies”!
Aerospace studies: Imma about to end this mans whole career!

Thank you for this wonderful video! I am a freshman student currently taking up BS Statistics major in Actuarial Science. I chose this course over Computer Science because in my opinion, Computer Science is kind of saturated already. Not sure if my choices are right but i hope that i could work in the Tech industry.
