Vc. Truls Mørk
Pf. Håvard Gimse

Edvard Grieg composed the Cello Sonata in A minor, Op. 36 for cello and piano, and his only work for this combination, in 1882–83, marking a return to composition following a period when he had been preoccupied with his conducting duties at the Bergen Symphony Orchestra as well as illness.
The work borrows themes from Grieg's own Trauermarsch zum Andenken an Richard Nordraak (Funeral March in memory of Richard Nordraak) and the wedding march from his Drei Orchesterstücke aus Sigurd Jorsalfar (Three orchestral pieces from 'Sigurd Jorsalfar'). Grieg dedicated the piece to his brother, John, a keen amateur cellist. Friedrich Ludwig Grützmacher premièred the work with Grieg at the piano on 22 October 1883 in Dresden. (Wiki)

The sonata has three movements:
1.Allegro agitato
2.Andante molto tranquillo
3.Allegro molto e marcato

The work takes approximately 26 minutes to perform.

The best cello/piano sonata ever! The piano part is just amazing ... perfect synergy between the cello and piano. One of THE best performances of this masterpiece!

The end of the first movement has some motives from his piano concerto. The third movement reminds of the concerto as well. Beautiful piece

This is probably the best chamber piece ever written by Grieg. Violence and lyricism are masterfully balanced. Excellent rendition!!!

Edward Grieg wrote this Sonata for his brother and himself.

Truls plays with full juice: find me a contemporary cellist with richer vibrato. The final coda is perfectly grandiose.

The sonata is an old favourite and I generally love this performance. But, reading the score, I see that at letter E (2.08) Grieg has written "poco animato" and that the performers go against his instruction, slowing slightly down. I would have preferred the "animato"

Wow, this is fabulous! Extremely impressive cello and piano playing! I play both instruments, and hope to be able to play this with another musician one day!

By the bye, it might be only my observation, but has anyone noticed the similarity between the main theme of the first movement of this Sonata and the main theme of the first movement of Dvořák’s Cello Concerto?
