If you have issues remembering which one is dessus and which one is dessous in French, I have a great tip for you!
Use the pyramid system. Dessus as only 1 letter U so it's at the top of the pyramid. Dessous as 2 letters OU so it's at the bottom of the pyramid.
Here you go, you will never mix them up again!

The French “u” is actually pronounce like “ee”, but when pronouncing it, make the mouth into the “O” shape and make the sound “ee”. It needs some practice sometimes I see, but in my native language, there is the sound “ü”(which corresponds the French “u”).

Hi Dylane! Thanks for your linguistic work. I am a good language learner and pick up quick so which book of yours should I start with if I am very new to French? I enjoy learning and I like your style!

I suspect the reason why many English speakers get confused, is because many pronounce those two words the same since the French "u" sound does not exist in English. I'm lucky that the French "u" is the same in my native language. When we are lazy, we just pronounce it as "ee", so I always tell English speakers if they would like to learn the sound, start off with the English word tee and try change it to an French tu by rounding your lips. The sound actually also needs to be moved forward so you can try move your tongue slightly forward if it helps you achieve that.

I remembered that you told about pyramid in one of your video and it's really helpful 🌹💐🌹

Did you also stretch the 's' consonant?

actually, there is a sous in dessous, and sous mean under, so dessous means below

Funny thing is, that’s how I made myself memorize it. Now, seeing this video makes me feel accomplished 😅

Dessous, dessus, dessous, dessus. C'est facile, oui?😊

Very helpful way to remember them. But I'll be darned if my old American mouth can make them sound different!

Thanks very clever! Thought I still think is stupid French had to have two words that sound so similar with absolutely opposite meaning 🤦‍♂️

yeah, but the pronunciation is so difficult! To an English ear, they sound almost exactly the same! :(

I know which is which and I can say it correctly, tho I do have to concentrate, but I'll be damned if I can hear the difference. My English ears just aren't tuned to the different sounds.
