Mustard is dope one thing I learned from him as a producer is simplicity. Most hits are not complicated it just gives you a feeling. Grindin by The Neptunes perfect example.

for anyone interested: the recording of a song and the composition of a song (the writing, the notes, etc) are 2 different assets. typically a record label owns the master recording and the songwriter(s) contol the composition (though it could be anyone else, including the record company as well).

to sample a record you're legally supposed to get permission from all of the rightsholders of both the master recording & the composition, but if you interpolate (recreate) the sample & don't actually use the master recording then you only have to deal with whoever owns the composition, which is much more likely to be the artist or songwriter & not a greedy company.

Explained it so well. That's how so many artists got sued in the late 80s and early 90s

He looks like a smart man trying to figure out how to explain something super simple

In popular music, interpolation (also called a replayed sample) refers to using a melody— or portions of a melody (often with modified lyrics)— from a previously recorded song but re-recording the melody instead of directly sampling it.

A lotta producers used to do this back in the 90's. "Gangstas Make The World Go Round" is a good example of this.

Props for being an actual musician that can re-play the songs your coping ideas from rather than just relying on technology to sample and sequence the original material. It pays to be a trained musician especially in live scenarios.

For every sample or music track made by a certain artist there are 2 kind of copyrights:
The recording itself
The music, lyrics ...

These can sometimes belong to 2 different entities (for example: the label own the recording, and the artist owns a portion of totality of the lyrics, melodies ...)

When you sample you have you have to licence both. But when you replay the original music and re record it or you interpolate the melody in your DAW (What Dj Mustard is referring to), you pay only for the second one and not the recording licence.

Juice World (Producer) interpolated the melody for Lucid dreams from a Sting song. They thought because they didn't sample it directly but replayed the melody they didn't have to licence it. Sting later sued them and won because he still owns that melody even if you replay it. Sting received a big portion of the profit of that song.

That's why you can put out remixes, you can remix a song as your interpretation in fact a lot of remixes don't even get touched if you put them out independently the record companies have to see meat on the bone and they have to see good sales to go after you sometimes.
