Another interesting thing Shanahan did in 2006 was announce Jay Cutler would make his first start in this game before the Broncos-Chiefs game the week before. Veteran Jake Plummer started against the Chiefs, and that would be his last start.

The only way...and I do mean the only way...this could make any kind of sense to me, would be if the Broncos were down by a field goal with less than a minute in the 4th quarter. Then I could see getting the kicker to move the chains so your offense could set up for a touchdown drive. But this was right before halftime, and they were UP by a field goal. So that rules that out. Kick the field goal, which should be a piece of cake with a kicker of Elam's caliber, go into halftime up by 6. NOT whatever this was.
