Use lower karat gold like 9-11k for practice since its so much cheaper. 24k can be like 4 bucks oer leaf. Just know that youll have to seal the lower karats because they will tarnish die to the lower gold content. Also, the gilders tip doesnt use static to pic up gold, it uses oil so thats why you brush it o. Your skin. And for that reason, try not to touch the guilders knife or cushion. If youre gilding for a long time and camt get oil, you can apply a thin coat of chapstick or lotion to your skin or lips. Also, loose leaf can be very hard in environments where theres a breeze so you can also use non loose leaf. I forget the word but its basically loose leaf thats stuck on paper and it will stick to the adhesive all the same. When it comes to the shine of the gold, its all about the preperation of the material.

I really like the texture in the gold! A tip: when you paint the size on, paint a little spot on a spare piece of glass at the same time. Then you can touch the extra spot of size to test if it's tacky instead of putting your fingers on the final piece. Hope that helps!

Wiping behind your ear doesn’t build static, instead the brush picks up a minute amount of skin-oil, to which the gold leaf sticks.

Firstly you have to ensure the surface is completely clean of any marks, grease and debris so it adheres better to the surface. When you're adding the water seize, literally drown the glass!! Make sure the whole surface is covered with lots of seize, let it just run. Seems odd at first but you mainly had issues because you were only using a really small amount and painting it on. Don't be shy with it and you'll smash it! Use Bon Ami or Bar Keepers Friend, both light abrasives to clean the glass and also remove excess gold leaf!

so rare to see stuff like this on youtube where the artist is actually doing research and learning before diving into a new medium... great work!!

Back 35+ years ago when I would do gold leaf…

I would wait until the sizing is “tacky” to the touch before laying down the gold leaf.

Then after the gold leaf is apply and the excess is cleaned off, I would do another coat of sizing to seal it down.

Awesome work @koysun ! This may not seem like a lot coming from a total stranger but your Art has improved tremendously since I first started following you. ..and that hasn’t been too long. I’ve always wondered how this technique was done so it was an added bonus to learn something new as well. Great post. Looking forward to your next adventure. 😊

Incredible! It’s great to see a unique skill being displayed on here in amongst all the crap people get likes and shares for. You’ve given me a little glimmer of hope that there are still proper, unique people with actual skills in the world. Keep up the amazing work! Lots of admiration from Devon, UK 🇬🇧
