Mojave Tutorial 1: Getting Started

Mojave is a musically minded granular sandstorm. Drawing its inspiration from vast swaths of desert in the American Southwest, Mojave is a live granular processor that uses microscopic bits of audio to create beautifully crafted sonic landscapes.

00:00 Introduction
01:18 Let's get started with Clock modes, Rate, Gen triggers and how to get grains moving.
02:36 Other ways to trigger grains? Hello, Gen Modes!
03:36 SIZE!
04:26 Don't forget to shut the window. Or, maybe open it?
05:04 Speed: Wait, we can pitch-shift grains?
05:39 Zone: Grains from the present and the past. (Too fun.)
06:35 The relationship between Distribute and Structure.
08:02 Take control of quantization with Sky modes.
09:06 I want my grains to jump around! Drift is your friend.
09:37 Whirl creates a universe in stereo. No, really.
10:03 TWO end-of-chain effects - Feedback and Reverb!
11:17 TWO freeze functions!
13:02 Dune: Mojave's unique CV/Gate output
13:38 Oh, we didn't tell you there's a mic on Mojave?
14:33 Patch Example - "Gypsum"
15:00 Patch Example - "Mic-Check"
15:56 Patch Example - "Interstellar Beats"
___________________________________________

The core of Mojave’s sound design palette is a unique set of melodic and rhythmic controls that presents each grain in a musical context. Generate clock-synced granular arpeggios, or envelope your sound in rich harmonic swirls with the turn of a knob.
All microsound settings can be easily accessed via individual knobs letting you tailor each grain, and effortlessly construct dunes of sound.
Mojave is not exclusive to modular signals either; become the wind itself by using the onboard microphone to sift through and manipulate acoustic audio.

And, just like Nautilus, Mojave’s internal settings can be configured via the USB drive and the Narwhal web app. Whether you are constructing pebbles or sandstone monuments, Mojave is the perfect balance between exploratory sound design and harmonious sublimity.

• Live granular processor and stochastic event generator
• Onboard high quality MEMS microphone
• Configurable Dune CV/Gate output
• Firmware updates & alternate firmware via the USB Drive
• Based on the Daisy platform

// GENERAL
• Width: 14HP
• Depth: 22mm
• Power Consumption: +12V=151mA, -12V=6mA, +5V=0mA

// AUDIO
• Sample Rate: 48kHz
• Bit-depth: 32 bit (internal processing), 24-bit (hardware conversion)
• True Stereo Audio IO
• High fidelity Burr-Brown converters
• Based on Daisy audio platform

// MORE THAN SOUND
The Mojave desert has always been a special place for Qu-Bit team members. A place of rest, a place of renewal, and a place for invigorating the creative mind.
We hope the sonic possibilities of Mojave instill those same feelings in you.

With every Mojave sold, a portion of the proceeds will go to the Joshua Tree National Park Association, and will help to preserve a portion of the Mojave desert that we hold dear to our hearts.

Ps; 2 days later I’m definitively fall in love with the MOJAVE. Thank you for this wonderful module. It’s better than I expected, and when i completely understood all functionality’s & their relationship the dream I haved in my head came true ❤.
Another dimension is open. Thanks again QU-BiT, you have completely know what a music/live producer expect when he makes electronic music 🎶!!! 🙏🙏🙏

My journey with Qu-Bit Mojave. A blog post no one asked for.

Attempt 1: Plug it in and mess around. Sounds bad. Can't make anything sound good. No idea what I'm doing. Why doesn't the clock input do anything? is it broken??

Attempt 2: Watch about 10 mins of this video, immediately put some cheesy reverby karplus-strong melody into mojave now armed with some brief info about how to actually use it... holy shit its incredible... it's SO GOOD and it makes the coolest like actually funky micro-rythyms when it's set to 20ms blip and Distribute around 2pm on the dial... Modulate that shit... Oh my fucking god it's so good...

Great module & great presentation!
Thanks also for including a microphone…so convenient to have one in the case, always ready :)

I bought one and received it yesterday….! And I love it 😍. 2 hours to understand the functionality’s and sound’s behaviours. Today I’m exploring its insane possibilities, and have so much fun and surprises 😮!! Thanks QU-BiT, this module push the sound design to another level (I should say another dimension to be honest). 20/20 ❤❤❤

Just looked at Molten Music Monthly and thought about the beauty of the backside of your resent modules. As an artist currently working as a framemaker I thought a limited number of these backsides could be framed, possibly with the lights, and then sold or auctioned for a good cause, but should definitely first be displayed in an art gallery. I know several visual artists who like me fell down the rabbit hole, probably to do with the blinking lights and those cables looking like scribbles when hooked up, but point is, we need to trick more artists to come down here.

What a beautiful module both in sound and physical design.. and I think I saw somewhere that you guys stepped up the unboxing experience as well. A small detail that I feel goes a long way for buyers.
Since May, I told myself no more modules, and I've stuck to that.. but I may make an exception. 😇

Thanks, this video is super helpful. I got my module in the mail today and it’s in my rack.

Pretty soon will have to have a case of all granular modules. (Nice work!!!)

Great tutorial/presentation, looks like a very usable module, well thought out and functional. Very tempting!

Sadly, this seems also a goodbye to Nebulae V2, which I'm sad to realise has been relegated to the Qu-Bit forgotten pile. I'd hoped that Qu-Bit would have updated some ideas in a new firmware (based on requests/suggestions) to make the module more useable, but sadly I suspect it's not going to happen😞.

And just when I thought I was done buying modules for a bit, along comes this monster things sounds ridiculous, love it, looks beautiful as well, grabbing one shortly

Sweet module, I’d love to see more quantised grain examples as I’m not quite convinced if I can implement it in a musical context, it seems difficult to get out of its stuttery unrhythmical behaviour, please convince me 😊

Looks great. Maybe I should get one and do a Beads/Arbhar/Mojave comparison.

Watched Jeremy's video, and preordered! Any idea when the release date is?

I was wondering if this was a Beads killer, but I don't think so. They have much in common but I can see that I would use them differently and for different tasks as I think they have different advantages. Building a second case atm, a long moment that is, and was wondering whether to get a second Beads but don't think so now. Must get Data Bender first though.

What a great demo! I may have to replace my clouds 😅

What is the relationship between setting on the knob and corresponding cv input? Does the control voltage bypass the setting on the knob or does it modulate within the parameters set by it? Anyways wonderful module, like beads with a hint of data bender - I love it so much.

Planning to get one for my first ever eurorack! I am intrigued by the onboard mic capability and am envisioning to process my vocals. How do you sample the voice in the 'mic-check patch'?

I LOVE this module! Old Nebulae fan here. Please please please implement quantisation in just intonation! This is *critical* for drone music :))))

At around 15:04 you pull back and show using a case that very nicely fits all the Qu-bit modules.
Could you please tell me what case you are using for this video?

Looks fun but I feel like I'm hearing some zero-crossing clicking every now an then in the demo video. It's a big pet peeve in digital modules for me. 9:57
