We hope you enjoy this walk around Frome in Somerset - a great day trip from Bath (with subtitles). One of the Times “Best Places to Live in Britain”, Frome is also a welcoming and vibrant place to visit, with its rich history, culture and natural beauty. Full of historic buildings, beautiful independent shops and creative people, Frome is a wonderfully eventful town. It is the perfect destination for discerning tourists looking for something just a little bit different on visits to Somerset.

Frome is a town with a charming historic centre and has a wealth of architectural interest alongside a thriving contemporary and performing arts scene. Frome is also the original Somerset Market Town, a hugely important destination hosting a thriving market since the time the ink was still wet on The Domesday Book. This tradition continues today with regular markets every Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.

It's home to a number of arts venues and galleries in historic buildings, including The Black Swan, Rook Lane Arts, and the Silk Mill. It also has a number of choirs, a symphony orchestra, a Youth Band, two theatres – the Memorial and Merlin, Westway Cinema and the noted Cheese and Grain, a fantastic live music venue often boasting performances and shows from many a headline act, especially during the Frome Festival and on the layover from Glastonbury.

Wow, I hadn't heard of Frome before you introduced it to me. I can't quite believe that was the case, it's such an interesting place and so close to Bath! Thank you LW.

Thank you so much for this - Frome is top of my list for places to stay when I eventually visit/move to the UK from Australia. I often 'walk' it on Google earth but this has audio too! 🙏❤

Really good tour. Frome seems calmer and nicer vibe than some parts of Bath.

What a lovely looking old place. It's such a shame it's blighted by that horrible busy road going through the middle.

What a special little place and so smoothly captured by you as always LW. Entering the lovely street at 0:41 was quite breathtaking. The area around 12:24 was lovely too.

Indeed i've heard of and seen videos of Frome but have never been there. It has a lot of character and is rich place to be.
It has old world charm and a liberal culture. I'd like to visit someday. Very detailed walk around, i enjoyed it.

Welcome all to my charming hometown, I am what they call a fromey!

Frome (pronounced froome) comes from the ancient Celtic word Frāmā meaning fair, fine or brisk and was founded by St Aldhelm in the mid 600's at the site of our church which sits in the middle of 3 fresh water springs one of which runs through cheap street where the Anglo Saxons drank from it. A later stone church stands here now but! One wooden Anglo Saxon beam survives and is found inside the church

The site of Frome was situated in a dense forest of oak, yew and ash known as selwood forest which was home to a tribes of Celts that settled here from the Cornish coastlines, over the years it became known for its wool trade and has strong links to many surrounding covens during the medieval period, it was near here that king Alfred the Great fled the danish invasion of the great heathen armies and went into hiding on the Somerset levels near Glastonbury before leading the charge to rid the land of all the viking invaders, a tower to commemorate this achievement can be found outside Bruton known as King Alfreds tower
