Dunne and Grant also starred in another Christmas-themed movie: “Penny Serenade.” It’s a real hankie wringer of a movie and really showcases both Dunne & Grant’s dramatic chops. Co-stars Edgar Buchanan and Beulah Bondi.
The little boy on shipboard in Love Affair later played Grant/Dunne’s son in My Favorite Wife.

Haven't seen this movie in at least 25 years. I may have to watch this again, now. Loving your videos!

The 1939 “Love Affair” is has been free on YouTube for 10 years (wish I’d known!) on the PizzaFlix channel. Richard Denning sans rolled up sleeves. A great loss. He pays for her wardrobe. She’s a wife in training and he’s obviously wealthy but won’t everyone in NYC know she was “kept” if only from the store staff (remember “The Women” 1939).
The second version’s grandmother was played by Cathleen Nesbitt who played Hayley Mills’ grandmother in “The Parent Trap.”
Her wardrobe is a dream for a redhead too. But I do really really love “The Grass is Greener.” Robert Mitchum!
I actually prefer “Love Affair.” Boyer is actually French, Maria Ouspenskaya is better I think. (Loved her in “Dodsworth.” “Have you considered my dear how little happiness there is for the older wife of a young man?”)
Old version—“pink champagne”? “Champagne cocktail please” which is champagne with a sugar cube.
I have to say, I prefer the first “Love Affair.” Dunne is just more naturally witty.
Best lines: “You’re very lovely girls, but you have very bad manners.”
“Do you ever think it’ll take the place of baseball?” “My mother always told me not to enter any man’s cabin in a month ending in R.”
Interesting too that both women had natural red hair.

An awesome review. Very insightful. I just watched the movie yesterday for the first time. The hosts on TCM (I recorded the movie on DVR on New Years eve) said that the director made the remake because his career was in a slump and he needed another hit so he went back and remade his earlier success. The movie made me feel powerful feelings of romance. You said Christmas is about redemption, does that mean you’re a Christian ? Anyway I hope to see my ex Tina in the Philippines soon if God wills and this movie inspired me that things may go well if I see her again. ❤ please review more romantic comedies . How about my favorite, As Good As It Gets with Jack Nicholson. Please also review the Nicholas Sparks movies like The Notebook which are very romantic . I’m happy u also like Godzilla

Excellent review! I prefer the 58’ version but also love the earlier version. I prefer Grant over Boyer. Dunne and Kerr are 2 of my favorite actresses. Normally I prefer B&W but the color version is beautifully shot and edited.
I agree with your interpretation of “The Bishop’s Wife”. Grant is too perfect and Niven is too neurotic, but Loretta Young is fantastic as she always is. Grant was originally suppose to play the Bishop.

Hello J., and happy holidays. I've seen parts of this as well, mostly in a reaction video, but I'd like to see it all. Before that, though, I'd watch the 1939 version, looks awesome. I did see all of Penny Serenade, which someone below mentioned. Grant in that seems kind of unemotional and non-charming, I dunno. This was a very well constructed review, I enjoyed your take. Btw, there's a new critter on your shelf; could be a brown dog, cow, or maybe a reindeer? Take care.

I think of "The Apartment" as a Holiday (but I wouldn't say Christmas) film

I watched this after Sleepless in Seattle! Great film.
Also, I love the remake of The Bishop's Wife with Whitney Houston and Denzel Washington!

, , your voice, amongst many things I can't ever refrain from, after watching the documentary partially edited by, Michael Wadleigh, Thelma Schoonmaker, Martin Scorsese, Yeu-Bun Yee etc of the 3days of love & peace, , Woodstock (1970) and featuring, among many, , Joan Baez, always makes me think if you were brought up on Staten Island or near the village of Bethel, NY ✨🕊️🤍, you quite often also make me desire to be more with people of the 70s to the 90s and their nature than the misfortunes of the UK folk that after seeing their disenfranchisement during the boom years have then become the celebrated national treasures with their hatred disinterest and blank conformity, ,
I once luckily spent the latter warm terms of middle school plaiting daisy chains, discoursing life's reasonings with intelligent brunettes, who seem to have evaporated ✨🤗🌼
, , I too feel, although, an affair to remember 🚢 also has its own stand up greatness 🌇 it's many flaws are not featured in the original of, Love Affair (1939), , the theme tune, overly repeated being one ✨🥂🍾💞 Merry Christmas, Jerome ✨🎄
, , you're the closest thing to heaven ✨🕊️🤍🤍🤍💐💋 x
