BEST 50mm Lens Sony Has Ever Made - 50mm F1.4 GM Lens Review For Wedding Filmmakers

Sony's 50mm F1.4 GM lens is in my opinion, the best 50 mm that Sony has ever made; and while it may not attain the heights of Bokeh that the 50 mm F1.2 gm reaches, this 50 1.4 is dramatically lighter, it will feel better balanced on your camera, it’s incredibly sharp, and more than anything, I get the same feeling when using this 50 that I do when using the 24 mm F1.4 GM, which to this date is still my favorite lens that Sony has ever made.

I'm just as excited, and this is the lens I've been waiting for. I have the 24 and 35 GM lenses, but my 50 is the Sigma Art. I've been wanting to upgrade, and while the f1.2 was enticing its price always kept me from pulling the trigger. The 50mm Sigma Art is a great lens and I just couldn't justify the cost. I don't really need that extra bit of apurture. Now I'm really glad I waited because this looks like the lens for me. Looking forward to that B&H notification.

In my experience Zeiss 50 1.4 gives very pleasing and balanced image in terms of color and contrast, skin tones come out gorgeous. G-Master lenses in my world have strong shift to red and green colors, giving skin pink tint that I have to compensate for. I would pick Ziess any time for video over G-Master, given most of professional Cine lenses based on Zeiss optical formulas. For me filmic look = Zeiss. People just don't forget "Old" Contax Zeiss lenses, because once you see the magic Zeiss does to the video, it's unforgettable.

Thank you for this review! What lens you're using for the intro video? I really like that blurry background.

Great video man! appreciate it. If you had to choose between the 50 1.4 and the 85 1.4, what would you do?

Hey Matt, Do you always protect your lenses with uv filters and what kind? Also, have you ever used the Kase neutral density filter pack before?

Awesome review, I had the 50mm 1.2 and sold it. Stuck with the 55 1.8. I think I will give the 50 1.4 a try. I think another plus is that it uses a 67mm thread which most lenses use.

I actually love the old Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 based on the century old Planar design. Autofocus performance is also amazingly fast from my perspective. I only see ever so slightly marginal gains in these comparisons, the overall technical and optical level is very high. If you are looking for a standard lens with less sterile bokeh, just get the very affordable Samyang 45mm f/1.8. Super tiny and lightweight as well.

Saw some reviews about the 1.4 compared to the 1.2 and the Auto Focus is a downgrade. Love the size and weight, but AF is killer for me considering I already have the 1.2 ! Will be sticking with the 1.2 for sure

Hi Matt! Just wanted to ask

I do have an A7c of the moment and I'm looking to upgrade to a A7s3 or an FX3.

Just wanted to ask which lens would you recommend for an all around prime for video?

For weddings, events, commercial ads like a go to prime lens.

I could only get one which do you think would be the all rounder? 24, 35m, or the 50mm f1.4?

Have had the 1.2 for about a year. It looks great but I'm sticking with the 1.2

What if big and heavy wasn’t a problem would u say the 50 1.2 is better? Worst? Or the same? I’m buying used so prices are similar I’m leaning for the 1.2 but video like this make me say hum?

I have a tough time deciding between 50, 85, and 135, all G Masters, but it looks like I will get the 50mm in three weeks, and then the 135, three months later, and the 85 3 months after that. I have been filming with the 24mm, even for close-ups (but that was because I made odd movies and liked the distortion in the close shots). I am not worried about focus-breathing because I don't normally change focus. I a, curious about the focus breathing compensation feature. Other than these purchases, I will save for the global shutter camera, which as been my wish since I stopped filming on the F700. I would love for Sony to make another high frame rate camera. I don't want to betray Sony and go for the Chronos camera.

I find myself using my 50 1.2 always in 1.4, so, I already have this lens 😀
