Elements of a Crime: Mens Rea and Actus Reus

Welcome to the first video in my ‘Lightning Law Moments’ series, where we learn about important legal concepts in a flash.
Our Learning goal for today is to identify and analyze the two elements that make up a crime:
1) actus reus – the guilty act
2) mens rea – the guilty mind

Both these elements must be proven by the Crown lawyer beyond a reasonable doubt, in order to secure a conviction.

That makes so much more sense. Both are needed because without either one, it’s not a crime. No Actus Reas = You didn’t do an act to commit that crime. Thinking is not a crime.
