Read about Joe Turney (later corrupted into Turner), the subject of this song. The most feared man in West Tennessee in the late 1800s, Turney was responsible for delivering Black prisoners to the state. Almost all of the prisoners were given in return for commission to private farms etc where they were to labor in brutal conditions for the period of their sentence.
