There is a handle on the hatch for closing. It’s inverted on the plastic part. I have a ‘22 Golf R and I come from having many VW’s. it works fine.

I bought a 2023 20th Anniversary edition Golf R four months ago. I love it. We also have a 2022 Audi S3. We love the Audi just as much. Audi has a nicer and more user friendly interior. VW has more options for less $. Audi is a better looking car, but it was $9K more expensive. All in all, they are both great value for $ spent. I highly recommend both.

I realize this review is over a year old, but I just finally purchased a late 2024 Golf R for about $1000 under msrp $49239- almost felt like a deal. So far, a stellar car and the info/capacitive buttons took about 18 minutes to fully understand. Too bad the deep door sill doesn’t have PPF or protector. Also, roof bars on roof rack don’t allow sunroof to open!? Overall- easy daily performance driver

Just picked up my new 2024 R 6sp in Lapis blue yesterday. I had to drive nearly 400 miles to get it, though. Dealers in my area are "adjusting" prices by $5K IF you got there fast enough. The dealership I dealt with worked me by phone and Face Time and we settled on a much better price. I traded in a 2022 Golf GTI 6sp which is a great drive, too . Driving home took 8 hours due to intermittent heavy traffic, but gave me a great feel for how planted and fast it is. Having had a 2018 R, I know how good these are in snow. Yeah, the buttonless climate control is terrible, but I'm used to it now and it's not a deal breaker. I'm very happy to get the last of the manuals. I hope VW reconsiders this stupid move.

Please bring back quality buttons. Capacitive touch is not the future we want. Good, high quality, knobs and buttons, preferably aluminum.

I have the Golf R 20th edition with 6 Speed Manual. If you are on the fence for a pricey hatchback, get the Automatic (DSG)

They need a more Scirocco looking version of this with 2 doors. This looks like a square econobox that nobody will notice, even with all the badges and colors.

1) Can you turn off the auto-dimming side mirrors?

2) Can you redline the DSG without it autoshifting for you or is that only possible in Nürburgring mode?

I owned the original R, 2004 MK4 R32 24V VR6. With that said, the new Golf R, in my opinion, is made for one type of driver, not a VW hot hatch enthusiast. A real VW enthusiast loves the VR6 (as an option) two doors and six on the floor, at the very least, offer it. In Europe, at least, they still make TWO door GTI with much better-looking interior, GTI Clubsport, Clubsport S and the GTI TCR. And for close to $50K for a Golf R I rather buy a used Audi RS3, S3, or a RS4 with 450HP naturally aspirated V8! My opinion of course.

I'm wishing I'd be in the market for a good awd vehicle next year (2024) but financially it doesn't yet feel right to replace my existing '15 Scion FR-S. We'll see, now that I know this R-spec is out. This is all especially since Subaru has let many of us down with its sudden discontinuation of its STI. Toyota's little hot hatch seems too limited in its availability but may be my other potential choice at this time. Thanks for the review.
