The Mighty Voice of the Queen Mary #Shorts

Learn a little about the Queen Mary's steam whistles! There were originally 3 six-foot long whistles, each tuned to 55Hz which gives the Queen Mary a deeper voice than any modern passenger ship today...well except for the Queen Mary 2 which actually has one of the original horns!

Thing is Queen Mary's whistle is being blown by compressed air these days. It was made to use steam, that changes the tone of the whistle quite a bit.

I believe that a ship's whistle is, in fact, literally a whistle- structurally quite different from a horn. There are usually 3 different 'chimes', cylindrical in shape, each sounding a different note. A horn is shaped like a really big herald trumpet and each sounds a single note, though they may theoretically be used in conjuction with similar horns sounding different notes. Both whistles and horns were steam powered back when ships were steam driven. Now compressed air is generally used. Both are very deep and loud.
It's possible that I'm mistaken- I'd love to hear from anyone with better knowledge of this.
At any rate, I love your content are your amazing speaking voice. Keep up the great work.

Mayday, Mayday, this S.S. Poseidon calling. That’s what I think when I hear that whistle.

I used to stay at the hotel when visiting SoCal for work in the 1980s. Beautiful and the only earthquake-proof hotel in the area. If you are near the whistles, all you feel is a vibration, not any sound. However if you stand at the very prow, you will be blasted.

I heard them yesterday on my visit to the Aquarium of the Pacific. It's crazy how powerful that bass is, even from a far distance.

I don't know why the pitch matters, deeper is better on a ship because it travels farther, thus allowing for more warning in the case of fog or any other situations where a horn would be usefull

I love how the Queen Mary's horn placement on the first funnel resembles a face.
