Parries imo is the best defense skill to have. Head movement is tiring and leaves u unbalanced. Footwork takes you out of the pocket making counters difficult. Smothering/clinching can be hard to get into position for and takes even more energy than headmovment. And blocking doesn’t prevent 100% of the damage.

Everyone knows that pressing L1 at the right time does a parry.

In my experience, head movements are risky but create good chances for countering. It’s like a risk-reward thing I reckon. On the other side, controlling a distance with footwork is basically risk-free but you miss the countering chances. Parring is just between them, you have good chance to counter but you also take a little bit risk if your op feints you.

Parries are my preferred defense technique because you don't take any impact to your hand, it creates opening for counters and it tires the opponent's arm after a while

I myself found parrying to be effective because I don´t have to rely on my reflexes. I always liked to move my upperbody a lot, but I never had the reflexes for it.
But parrying has worked really well for me.
I think it works best when you understand your opponents offense, or offensive moves in general. You know what to expect and thus you react preemptively and accordingly. When it comes to head movement, I have to rely of my reflexes to tell me when to move. Parrying allows me to set up my defense before I have to react, if that make sense. I can put up a small shield instead of having to move my head right before impact.

So if you have a good understanding of boxing, or your opponent, it´s a very simple and effective defensive technique.

Many traditional Kung Fu styles incorporate some kind of parry skill (not so much Karate? Correct me if I'm wrong). I trained in Hung Gar and Choy Li Fut for a few years and we learned two quick parries with the forearms followed up immediately with two or more hard chain punches. I find these technique translate to boxing well.

Head movement, keeps your hands up combined with good footwork will be the best way to defend punches. Parry is only necessary if your tryna exchange in the pocket.

Imo parrying is effective on long to mid range because you have to react precisely, even with feints you could still retract your arm back if you reacted

In my opinion, as a long-time MMA and newly obsessed-boxing fan, I believe the down parrying is the most effective, because it gives you the extra defense of bobbing your head back and both the bobbing and down parry both give you big openings for counter punches or attacks to your opponent.

Just beautiful to watch. I would have loved some old footage of niccolino locche to illustrate some of these defenses.
I know how I will use my next sparring sessions, thanks a lot
