The award-winning, third music documentary in Kenneth Thomas’ trilogy about indie music culture, IT CAME FROM AQUARIUS RECORDS explores the San Francisco-based independent record shop that helped shape the tastes of Bay Area residents and beyond for nearly a half a century.

Indie rock, psychedelic, folk, krautrock, weirdo Finnish prog rock, Japanese noise, glitchy black metal... Aquarius Records discovered and promoted all of this and more, years before it became cool, enriching countless peoples' lives. Explore the life and death of this globally revered institution as it tries to survive in an ever-changing world of dot-coms and downloads.

Interviewees include Matt Groening (The Simpsons), Wayne Coyne (Flaming Lips), Howie Klein (Former President of Reprise Records), Bruce Ackley, John Darnielle (The Mountain Goats), Ty Segall, and Liz Harris (Grouper), and every owner from the store's 47 year history.

Andee probably doesnt remember this but at one point he hooked me up with a massive stack of, at the time, rare and unreleased harvey milk recordings when i mentioned in my a quaruous order what huge fan i was of Courtesy and Good Will. It was so fn sweet dude.

I shed a tear every time I think about this place. From about 1999 onward, I was on the site every day, reading, listening, ordering stuff. When i finally got the chance to visit SF in 2012, it was the place i wanted to go to the most, i spent over an hour looking at stuff, Andee sold me a few great things off of tUMULt (Weakling, Hammers of Misfortune that I recall), and later that night I saw him again at the elbo room for a VHOL gig. I pine for those days again, how I wish it was still there. When aQ closed, I was devastated. I've been looking forward to seeing this film for a long time. Thank you for making it.
PS - I still look at their archived lists and reviews, still finding things I never knew about.

When we finally got Internet in the early 2000s, Aquarius Records’ website was a beacon for intriguing, mysterious music - I would read their descriptions and listen to the MP3 (?) snippets and often order some obscure album I never knew existed prior. They were serious music fans, and turned me onto some fantastic albums. Thank you Aquarius Records….🤘🤘
