As many times as I’ve heard this iconic jazz standard played, or sang, Joe Pass’s solo rendition of Autumn Leaves, from the “Virtuoso” sessions, has always been the penultimate version for me. This artist’s interpretation goes way beyond Pass’s; almost putting the song at risk of having its melody swallowed up amidst a display of the player’s obvious amazing technique. It has been said by many songwriters (including the late great Johnny Mercer, who wrote the lyrics to the American version of this standard), “Without a melody there is no song!” I would agree with that. This artist does capture the essence of the piece — yes, the melody is still there — and adds an atmospheric feel to it that is as beautiful as it is ethereal. Love the tasteful use of the whammy. Very elegant fusion of new school “guit-artistry” with an old school jazz number.
